HCWS Endowments for the Arts

Each year, donations are made to the NC Community Foundation in the name of High Country Watermedia Society (HCWS). HCWS directs these funds to non-profit organizations located in the counties represented by our members on an annual basis. 

Examples of organizations and schools that have received funding for special projects are:  

• Elkland School Art Center
• Friends of the Watauga Count Public Library
• Children's Playhouse 
• Watauga Project on Aging
• Children's Playhouse
• Valle Crucis School
• Parkway School
• Watauga River Partners
• Watercolor Society of North Carolina
• Brushes for Vincent
• Florence Thomas Art School, West Jefferson
• Alleghany Health Center, Sparta

The recipient of a $500 endowment is Allegheny Health in Sparta NC an affiliate of Wake Forest Baptist Health and Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. 

The basic idea is to create a mural in a hallway of our Alleghany Health Center to thank all in the community who work hard during the unusual times of Covid 19.  There was a lot of input from the community what needed to be in the mural. This will be visible for many years to come by those visiting the Hospital. Everybody is super excited and thankful for the generosity of HCWS.  

The artist is Meredith Walker, she has done several murals in Sparta, at the Gathering Place and a few other places around town, she took art classes in college, and currently enjoys drawing and painting.
