Exhibitions on behalf of the HCWS 2024

During the 2024 season, HCWS will offer members participation in two Exhibits, a juried exhibit at The Jones House in Boone and a non juried show at The Florence Thomas Art School in West Jefferson, September 3rd - September 30, 2024.

Both exhibits are for artist to exhibit their work and to offer their work for sale if they wish, with the requirement of The Florence Thomas Art School that a commission of 35% of the art will be retained from any art sold.

Jones House Cultural Center, 604 W King Street, Boone, NC 28607

• Exhibit dates: July 1st - July 26th, 2024. 
  • Deliver artwork to Jones House Monday July 1st, 10AM-Noon.
  • Reception and Prize presentations July 5th, between 5PM and 7PM.
  • Awards: 1st place $150, 2nd place $100, 3rd place $75, Peoples Choice Award $75 and Honorable Mentions, Ribbons.
  • Pick-up artwork: July 26th, 10AM-Noon.
  • There is a $15 entry fee to be paid to the HCWS for up to two entries.
• About the Juror, Cathy Futral:
  • Cathy Cranford Futral is a NC native, an artist and art educator, living in Sarasota, FL. She and her husband, Jim enjoy traveling in the US and abroad to visit museums and gardens. One of their favorite places is Boone, NC where they spend their summers.  
  • While enjoying the great outdoors of North Carolina Mountains, Cathy often paints during the summer months with the Watauga Arts Plein Air group and is a docent at the (Blowing Rock Art and History Museum). Also, she is an ambassador for Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff in Boone.
  • Cathy has 40+ years of experience as an art educator, from kindergarten classes to college. She loves to teach and continues to share her love of art with all ages and all levels of skill. Most of her career was as the Professor of Art at South Florida State College for 20 years, where she enjoyed teaching various courses; drawing, design, painting and watercolor, pottery, and art history.
  • Cathy has a love of teaching and is a wealth of knowledge and skill, with a BA degree from Appalachian State University in Art studio, Master of Science Degree in Art Education from FSU, and a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Studio Art from UNCG. She is also still active in her many professional organizations, including Florida Watercolor Society, where she is a signature member, Florida Art Education Association, where she was awarded the Florida Art Education Association Higher Education Art Educator award. She has served as judge, AP reader, and sold her paintings, and won awards for her work.
  • Cathy works mostly in watercolor on paper and acrylic on canvases, often working outside to capture her subjects.

The Fall Exhibition is held at the Florence Thomas Art School, 10 S. Jefferson Ave,  West Jefferson, 28694. The theme is "Color My World". 

• Exhibit dates: September 3rd - September 30th, 2024.
  • Entries must be original works of art.
  • Deliver Artwork: Tuesday, September 3rd, 10AM - 3pm.
  • Gallery Crawl: Friday, September 13th, 5PM - 7PM.
  • Pick-up artwork: Monday, September 30th, 10AM - Noon.
  • There is a $15 entry fee to enter up to three paintings. The Florence Thomas Art School retains 35% of any sale.

HCWS Members' exhibits at monthly meetings

For the purpose of getting to know each other better and to learn from one another, members are invited to share work they have created in online workshops at HCWS meetings or Plein Air events. These sessions will be "Show and Tell" type, with suggestions and comments to be offered by members present.
